Celebrating Grandparents’ Day: Fun Activities and Events

Celebrating Grandparents’ Day is more than just another obligation on a calendar. It’s an opportunity to honor the legacy of a family. Grandparents’ Day has been honored annually since 1979 when President Jimmy Carter signed it into law. This year, Grandparents’ Day falls on Sunday September 8.

This is a great time to gather your family to partake in intergenerational activities that will have lasting benefits for everyone. For seniors, intergenerational relationships reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can be a key factor of depression. For kids, these relationships can aid in the development of social skills and building a respect for people older than them.

Spending time together is often the best way to celebrate. Here are some activities and places around Winchester we recommend checking out this Grandparents’ Day:

Dinosaur Land
Dinosaur Land is great fun for the family. With over 50 massive dinosaur statues, you can enjoy the park’s many sites.

Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum
This museum is full of interactive, educational exhibits for the family. Kids and adults alike can enjoy over 19,000 square feet of fun, including a rooftop space and opportunities for hands on learning, covering history, physics, ecology, construction, and so much more. This is a great way to play and learn with the kids in your family!

Incredible Flying Objects Store
This shop is full of fun! With flying and non-flying objects in stock, you can pick up an activity to enjoy outside with your grands. Located in downtown Winchester, you can drop in on the shop during your day in town!

Marker-Miller Orchards
September is the perfect time for apple picking! These orchards have six different types of apples and opportunities for farm fun. Stroll the market for fresh fruit and veggies, pack a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Blandy Experimental Farm
The grounds at Blandy are maintained by the University of Virginia and are open to the public. Blandy is an active research site, but also has beautiful trails, water features, and plenty of trees, flowers, and other plants. Enjoy a day out exploring at Blandy Experimental Farm with your family!
