Here in Northern Virginia at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, we cater to the highest of standards, offering the best in senior living amenities. Whether it’s daily fine dining, shopping in our Gift Shop, pampering in our Hair Salon, or meticulous spring cleaning, conveniences are standard for our guests. Here’s a partial list of our retirement living services and amenities—independent senior living at its best.

Art Studio

The studio is located in the Vitality Center and features a huge, round window that lets in just the right amount of natural light. There is also a turret complete with custom-made stained glass created by one of our gifted residents. We are fortunate to have a full-time, artist/instructor who teaches classes in every medium imaginable, inspiring residents in every level of care. Our three art galleries on campus proudly display works from residents as well as regional artists.

The Chapel

The Chapel that a community built. The whole room is a labor of love. Our resident woodworkers and artisans created the stunning doors, windows, altar table and baptismal font.  A beautiful tapestry crafted by the hands of residents adorns our prayer altar. Here, our chaplains lead services for residents of many faiths. They are trusted counselors as well. All religions are welcome through our inspiring doors—and welcome to create their own expressions of faith.

The Abbey

A stage and a large screen enable us to utilize this room for many purposes. It’s the area where luncheons are held, and holiday buffets are set up. A dance floor can be added for parties. Health fairs, fashion shows, teas, lectures, whatever the need, the Abbey can seat up to 200+ people with the partition opened. Since it is located right next to the kitchen and the Canterbury Dining Room, food service is readily available.  There are activities in the Abbey almost daily.

Library

There is a committee of volunteers that keep the Library organized and accessible to everyone. With over 3,000 books, it is well stocked with both donated as well as purchased books. There are large print issues and a wide variety of newspapers and magazines that residents can read while sitting in the lovely Commons area, or they can check out a book to read at their leisure.

Outdoor Areas

One of the best features on campus is our mature trees. When building the cottages, great care was taken to save the natural habitat as much as possible. There is always something blooming, making for a truly beautiful environment. We have the dog park where pups can run leash free. There is a lovely water feature in the courtyard next to a gazebo and putting green. Our greenhouse provides a chance to get hands dirty, as does our resident garden area. The croquet pavilion and court are used for Bocci ball games as well. If you prefer strolling, there are hills that provide a good workout as you loop around the cottages and the main buildings.
